Fazenda Barra Alegre

Project Arboria Legatum

The Challenge

Returning a family farm with 150+ years of coffee and cattle cultures, in the state of Minas Gerais, Southeast of Brazil, to its original Atlantic Forest condition

This region, close to the city of Santa Barbara do Leste in the state of Minas Gerais, is dominated by rolling hills and valleys, with the Brazilian North-South highway, BR-116, cutting through it.

The farms around us produce mostly coffee and raise cattle, with a few leasing their land to grow Eucalyptus for paper production.

The project to replant the forest will span 5 years, with a goal of around 10,000 trees.

In 2025, year 0 of the project, 2,000 seedlings from 26 Atlantic Forest native species were planted.

The goal is to have this new forest last forever, as a protected reserve, in remembrance of my parents.

In the future we would like to host visitors and also set up displays which capture the history of the farm and region.

Come along with us through the years as our project unfolds
